Generic MASS Remote Operator
Training for operators of Uncrewed Surface Vessels

The Generic MASS Remote Operator Course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to safely and competently operate an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) using both Line-of-Sight (LOS) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS).

Recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency under MGN 703, the course delivers Generic MASS Remote Operator Training aligned with the baseline competency standards for remote and autonomous vessel operations. The training provides delegates with a credible, regulator-ready foundation from which to operate.

Training combines theory, simulation, and live on-the-water operations to build genuine competency across the full range of challenges remote operators face. Topics include situational awareness, human factors, cyber security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, navigation, communication protocols, operational planning, risk management, and the practical application of COLREGS within a USV environment.

Practical training is delivered through state-of-the-art Remote Operations Centre facilities and a simulation suite. Participants gain hands-on experience on 2 different USV Platforms and using multiple control systems, including ARDU Pilot, L3Harris' ASView, and Marine AI's Guardian. Simulation exercises and live operations cover vessel control, manoeuvring, berthing, mission execution, day and night operations, and working in both confined and open waters.

Our training has been designed to help organisations adopt new ways of working, reduce operational costs, and maintain the confidence of regulators and stakeholders that operations are being conducted safely and professionally. Successful completion has already supported organisations in strengthening safety cases and securing regulatory permission to conduct USV and MASS operations
