The maritime sector across the commercial world and naval defence are yet to take full advantage of new innovative business and operating models offered by new collaborative economies brought about by human-machine partnership in decision making.
The future maritime worker demographic will continue to diversify as it is driven by an evolving working environment. Decision support technology already combines with established rules and uses analytical tools to deliver objective, repeatable actions, with the human working in, on and off the loop. Decision support capabilities can now accelerate and augment human decision making in real time.
By 2050 these trends are expected to result in more than 50% of all operational functions conducted by technology.
To take full advantage of our connected transformation, maritime must devote more effort to build the future with a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem between human and machine.
The addition of remote and autonomous systems into the field of maritime operations creates opportunity, but if we do not manage the relationship between humans and decision technology, we are likely to introduce new and significant risks.
To control these risks, new systems and new ways of operating must be trialled and tested, de-risked and assured by a new highly skilled workforce of combined human and machine decision makers.
The application of new technologies should be consistent and evolve with legal and regulatory requirements, but also enable and support ethical principles that ensure and assure that the implementation avoids unintended harm. To benefit fully, maritime must upskill, scale and adopt the use of both new and existing technology by becoming champions of human centred digital transformation.
Going forward we should not only look to replace humans in certain tasks but also to empower them with new skills to work alongside machines performing shared tasks and using shared decision making.
